Where do tomorrow's managers want to work?

Workspaces are a real challenge for management today, especially since Real Estate is second only to salaries in most company’s list of expenses. The office is also at the heart of many managerial challenges. Issues related to workspaces concern both real estate directors and property managers as well as human resources directors.

For corporate real estate directors and property managers, their goal is to manage or even reduce real estate costs while increasing productivity of office facilities and associated services. The Director of Human Resources is meanwhile looking for a work environment that will optimize staff performance, taking into account new ways of working like telecommuting, hot-desking and working from other locations outside the office.  These new ways of working have taken off in light of new technologies now at our disposal.

In this new context, this study gives a voice to Generation "Y" and in particular to tomorrow’s corporate employees and managers who are now currently studying in a business school setting.

The "My Future Office" survey – conducted by the Real Estate and Sustainability Chair between May and June 2013, with some 2,000 students from ESSEC Business School – provides new information, complementary to the data existing regarding current employees.

What sets this study apart: 492 students, whose average age is 22, agreed to share their expectations regarding their future workplaces.

What key elements are new graduates and future managers looking for in terms of workspaces?

  • 93% do not want to work in a traditional office, and 73% favor of group workspaces.
  • For 40 % of them, the workspace will be a decisive factor when choosing an employer.
  • For 58% of future managers, the ideal headquarters is located inside Paris; Only 7% want to work in a large business center.
  • Most prefer working outside the company, especially in co-working areas or from home via telecommuting.
